John Salazar said he has never eaten so much food from the Philippines since moving to Canada. He immigrated from the Philippines in 2001 to Calgary, and in 2019, he relocated north to Lac La Biche, Alberta.
It was there he found a tightly knit and vibrant Filipino community much to his surprise. Lac La Biche has a population of around 2,300 people, surrounded by lakes and farmland. From the minute Salazar arrived in the town, he knew it would win him over. Upon his first week in the town, he found a Filipino aisle at the grocery store. He knew right then he would love the area. Living in the town has helped him reconnect with his heritage and reminds him of his younger years in Manila.

Salazar remembers growing up and going to a friend’s house daily for a street party or just hanging out and eating. He never experienced that in Calgary. But the culture in Lac La Biche was very much that way. You went to the dog park and saw a traditional Filipino get-together. Go to the street corner and you will hear people singing karaoke. This is the Filipino heritage alive in rural Alberta, said Salazar.
